WHO WE ARE
The North Dakota Chapter of HIMSS is one of over forty affiliated chapters of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, the largest health care information systems professional organization in the nation. An affiliated Chapter provides a local forum to discuss new issues and developments, learn about new methods and tools, and network with others with similar experiences. HIMSS National recently provided a vehicle for unified membership - a membership in HIMSS National includes one chapter membership at no extra cost. The following is a summary of some of the benefits of membership in a regional chapter.
The Benefits of Membership in a Chapter:
ADVANCEMENT: Advancement to Senior Member or Fellow Status honors members for contributions to the association. Senior Members and those with Fellow status are leaders within the society as well as the healthcare community. Advancement implies not only recognition for past contributions, but also the expectation of continuing participation and contributions to HIMSS and the healthcare community. Participation in HIMSS on a regional level provides opportunities for members to achieve the requirements to successfully accomplish the recognition through:
• Presenting at chapter meetings
• Serving as moderator of an education session at chapter meeting
• Authoring an article in chapter newsletter, bulletin, or technical document
• Serving as Chapter President, Officer, Committee Member, or on a Task Force or
• Advisory Council
• Attending regional conferences hosted by chapter
• Receiving Chapter awards or recognition for services
CERTIFICATION: Certification as a Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems is formal recognition of knowledge and competency in healthcare information and management systems. Participation in an affiliated chapter provides education needed to successfully fulfill the requirements and an opportunity to network with members who are preparing for the exam or those who have successfully passed the exam.
ADVOCACY: Regional chapter membership provides the opportunity to communicate state and regional policy to National. It provides a regional voice to HIMSS’ efforts focused on healthcare issues and policy related to healthcare information and management systems professionals.
STUDENT MEMBERSHIP: In addition to providing educational opportunities and networking with professionals already in the healthcare information management field, students are eligible for annual scholarships provided by HIMSS Foundation. Three $5,000 scholarships are awarded annually, one each for undergraduates, Master’s and PhD candidates. Scholarships are awarded for academic excellence and the potential for future leadership as demonstrated by communication skills and participation in HIMSS activities. In addition to the scholarship, the winners receive an all-expense paid trip to the annual HIMSS Conference and Exhibition. Participation in HIMSS activities is often the distinguishing factor when awarding scholarships.
In summary, membership in an affiliated chapter provides career development, education on a local level, networking with peers, and an opportunity to influence healthcare policy on a national level. Membership in our chapter will provide convenient opportunities to:
• grow professionally
• learn new things from others
• network with other health care professionals
• learn about job opportunities
• work collaboratively on healthcare community common initiatives
• give back to the profession
• become a chapter leader
